C&W working for better earth

Cable & Wireless, this country’s only full service telecommunications provider, will be a major sponsor of Earth Fest 2008. The initiative taken on by the Ministry of Health and the Environment will take place on April 22nd, 2008, which is International Earth Day.{{more}}

The event will take the shape of a parade and rally at the Victoria Park, which will include performances by local artistes, displays and interactive exhibitions highlighting the issues that are currently affecting the environment internationally as well as here in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. This year’s event will be used as a launching pad for future events to promote environmental awareness in the country. The organizers of the event expressed their wishes to make Earth Fest into a three day event within the near future.

Chief Executive (Ag.), Foster Hannaway expressed his company’s ongoing commitment to the environment. “Cable and Wireless has always been dedicated to the improvement of the country in various aspects. We have worked along with the Rose Place Community with their clean up campaign, and Earth Fest is perhaps one of the bigger events we are involved with in this area. We would like to congratulate the Ministry of Health and the Environment in spearheading this venture and look forward to working with them in the future.

Cable & Wireless has provided the Earth Fest 2008 committee with a monetary sponsorship of $8,000 as well as assistance with advertising and promotion. The company also donated a copy of Al Gore’s documentary “An Inconvenient Truth” to the Earth Fest Publicity Committee, which will be used as part of their efforts in sensitizing the country on the effects of issues such as Global Warming on our Earth.

Selvin Masters, coordinator of the Earth Fest Committee, was also present at the handing over ceremony and thanked Cable & Wireless for their support. “As one of the leading private sector companies in the country, we are happy that Cable & Wireless felt the need to assist us with this very important event. We hope that other businesses will come on board and lend their support as they have.” Masters went on to say that there will be awards handed over to unsung environmental heroes in the nation, as well as the launch of the “Trash to Cash” programme.
