Speaking at the handing over of EC $2.5 million for the continuation of the national library project on Wednesday, Taiwanese Ambassador Jack Cheng conveyed the greetings from the president-elect as well as from outgoing president Chen Shui bian.
âPresident Chen and Dr. Ma asked me to take this opportunity to convey and express Taiwanâs appreciation of the friendship of the government and people of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.â
Cheng noted that both countries have been working very closely in many areas, apart from the library project.
âWe have scholarships, learning resources centres, YES programme, computer programmes and workshops in Taiwan.â
Earlier during the press conference, Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves stated that the handing over of the cheque was done following the Taiwanese presidential elections to show that a change of leadership was not necessarily a change of international policies.
âPeople donât understand international politics. When you are friends with a country and you have responsible governments and you sign agreements, those agreements remained signed,â Prime Minister Gonsalves stated.
President-elect Ma won the presidential elections which took place on March 22nd. He will be inaugurated on May 20th.
Prime Minister Gonsalves is expected to visit Taiwan shortly after. (JJ)
