Caesar gets chance to make his mark in House

Young attorney Saboto Caesar will take his place on the government benches as a senator from April 2.{{more}}

Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves announced in parliament yesterday, that Caesar, 27, will replace Senator Ronald Marks, as part of a rotation policy adopted by the government following the Unity Labour Party’s (ULP) election victory in 2005.

Marks had been appointed senator in 2005 along with two other young attorneys, Rochelle Forde and Richard Williams.

Dr Gonsalves thanked Senator Marks for what he termed “his excellent service in the House,” and said that Marks is likely to be back in the House of Assembly after the next General Elections as an elected member.

In addition to his Senatorial appointment, Caesar, a 1999 national scholarship winner, who currently holds the post of Crown Counsel in the Attorney General’s Office, will be appointed parliamentary secretary in the Ministry of Housing, Lands and Informal Human Settlements.

Dr Gonsalves said that Caesar’s appointment has “future political implications.”

Caesar hails from Diamonds and now resides in San Souci. He has been widely tipped to contest the next general election in the South Central Windward constituency, replacing the incumbent Selmon Walters.

In related news, the portfolios of Youth and Sport have been taken from Minister Glen Beache and have been placed with the Ministry of Social Development and National Mobilization under Minister Michael Browne.

The Ministry of Local Government, formerly held by Browne, will now be attached to Housing Minister Julian Francis.

Minister Beache will continue as Minister of Tourism.

“Given the growing economic implications of Tourism, this will remain a stand alone ministerial portfolio,” Dr Gonsalves explained.
