Students receive scholarship fund

More than 60 students, most of them from secondary schools, converged at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs conference room on Wednesday, where they received financial assistance, made possible through this country’s government and the St. Vincent and the Grenadines High Commission in London.{{more}}

The cheques, each of approximately EC $500, were disbursed to children from the 15 parliamentary constituencies, as part of the Cenio Lewis Scholarship Fund.

Lewis, St. Vincent and the Grenadines’ High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, has been raising these funds for the last three years, through Vincentians and other organizations in the UK, who have expressed interest in making meaningful contributions in St. Vincent and the Grenadines and to assist needy students in furthering their educational pursuits.

The students were selected following collaboration between government representatives and schools in the various constituencies.

Addressing the gathering, Minister of Education Girlyn Miguel encouraged the students and parents to make good use of the funds received, although it may just be a ‘drop in the bucket’.

She urged discipline, and asked the students to believe in themselves.

Reiterating the calls of the Minister was Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sir Louis Straker.

He made an appeal to the students to strive for excellence and aspire to be the best.

Straker said that the efforts made by His Excellency Cenio Lewis and the Government of St. Vincent and the Grenadines are evidence of their commitment to Universal Secondary Education and the Education Revolution. (JJ)
