Reading is fun at Petersville

Chanting “I love reading”, “reading is fun”, “hats off to reading”, students of the Petersville Primary School marched through the streets of Kingstown Park, Block 2000 and Paul’s Avenue on Wednesday, February 20, bearing placards displaying slogans promoting the importance of reading and its benefits.{{more}}

The theme for the Petersville Hats off to Reading campaign was “Whenever you read, it’s like taking a tour around the world”. The Grade four students brought that theme alive in their presentations, taking trips as far as Paris and Africa without a boarding pass.

The thirst-quenching programme also saw performances from Grade 3 student Xyarie Howard who mesmerized the audience with his guitar rendition of Joyful Joyful. The pupils of Prep 2 sang their hearts out, and in so doing, encouraged their listeners to read so their days will become brighter. Prep1 emphasized that reading is “like vitamins… to help the brain grow strong”. The “Dog ate my homework” was another well put together poem.

Co-ordinator of the school’s programme Petra Wilson told Searchlight that the children participated fully in the Read-a- thon and they took what they learned to the next level by reading to their siblings at home.

Present at the programme were Education Officers responsible for Literacy Kay Martin-Jack and Karen Thomas who told Searchlight that they thought the performances were creative and energetic. They also stated that the teachers were committed to Literacy and they must be commended for their efforts.
