Pro Vice Chancellor: Strive for greatness

As the University of the West Indies celebrates its 60th anniversary this year, this country’s graduates have been urged to strive for greatness, and strengthening the legacy of their Alma Mater.{{more}}

The call was made by University’s Pro Vice Chancellor Professor Hazel Simmons McDonald as she addressed the packed hall of graduates, family members and well-wishers.

The ceremony, which saw 78 persons receiving their diplomas, degrees and certificates, took place at the Kingstown Methodist Church Hall, Thursday, January 10.



She urged the graduates to remember the humble beginnings from which the University came, as well as the many persons who passed through its doors and went on to greatness, including regional leaders and Nobel Prize winners.

McDonald spoke of the soon to be established UWI open campus, of which she is designated to be principal.

She noted that the campus, which would mainly offer online courses, with some face to face sessions, is geared towards facilitating persons who are unable to attend a university campus or a campus site due to other obligations.

Dr. Daniel Garraway, who delivered the feature address, implored the graduates to make use of the knowledge garnered at the University.

Through anecdotes and quoting from Shakespeare to ‘Shake’ Keane, Garraway pressed for the graduates to continue learning, grasp opportunities and be ambitious throughout their careers.

Of the 78 students, three graduated with first class honors: Raphael Robertson, Antonia Dublin and Gilbert Porter.

Porter delivered the Valedictory speech, in which he expressed gratitude to the University, family members, his workplace and his fellow students. (JJ)
