Digicel rewards poster competition winners

Telecommunications company Digicel rewarded the winners of the Caribbean Youth Environment Network, CYEN environmental poster competition with fantastic prizes.{{more}}

The competition, which was held under the 2007 World Environment Day theme, “Climate Change, a Hot Topic”, was coordinated locally by the GEMS group and supported by Digicel.

President of GEMS, Andrew Simmons, said he was extremely impressed with the students’ depictions and applauded their creativity.

Simmons said adults would take better care of the environment if they believed that they were only “borrowing” this earth from the children, who are the leaders of the future. The President of the 30-year-old GEMS organization said: ‘if this concept was realized the world would be a cleaner and safer place.’

Simmons also pointed out that the posters will be up for regional judging in Barbados in February, but before this, they will be displayed at an exhibition for public viewing.

Marketing Manager of Digicel, Juno De Roche, congratulated the winners of the environmental poster competition and also commended the teachers and parents who were in attendance for supporting the youngsters.

De Roche noted that Digicel will focus on making the youth champions in the society and urged parents to continue to give their children support.

She said if the local posters were adjudged regional winners, Digicel would also purchase airline tickets for the parents, so that they could attend the regional environmental poster award ceremony in Barbados.

The Digicel Marketing Manager also praised the GEMS organistion for helping to coordinate the event and congratulated GEMS on its 30th anniversary this year.

First place in the Under 10 category was Volton John, while second place went to Keeta Robertson, both from the Kingstown Preparatory School. First place in the 11-17 age group was Sheriese Trumpet of the Girls’ High school, while third place went to Ariane Baynes of the same school and second place went to Nathaniel McKenzie of the Intermediate High School. There were no entrants in the over 17 category.
