Schoolboy struck by car in Paul’s Lot

Sixteen-year-old Johnny Cuffy wasn’t too enthusiastic about praying during family devotions on Wednesday morning, but his father is convinced that prayers offered that morning saved his life later that day.{{more}}

Johnny was hit by a car just after coming out of a van near the George McIntosh mall in Paul’s Avenue, as he attempted to cross the road to go back to school at around 11 a.m.

Johnny, a form five student of the Dr J.P. Eustace Memorial School had gone home to Paul Over to run an errand.

“I sent him to carry money for his mother, so I am sad about what happened, but at peace, because God was in control,” said Joseph Bute.

But the trophy for faith belongs to Johnny’s mother, Hermie.

“I felt okay all the time, when I got the news people were saying I need to run, hustle, but I didn’t because my God was in control,” Hermie said, as she waited outside the Accident and Emergency Department to see the eldest of her six children.

Shortly after the accident, a shaken Journette Samuel, 17, who along with Shanika Shallow saw the whole incident from the back seat of the passenger van that Johnny had just come out from, told SEARCHLIGHT that she had feared the worst.

“I saw when the car hit him, and when he dropped, he was just shaking,” said the form four Intermediate High School student.

Meanwhile Makiba Glenn who was on her way out of the George McIntosh Plaza when the accident occurred said that she saw the driver of the car which hit Johnny, a woman, screaming and shaking after the impact.

The car involved was a silver grey Toyota Corolla, PP867, driven by Deborah Morris.

Johnny sustained injuries to his head and legs, and at press time was still warded at the Male Surgical ward of the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital. (KJ)
