Taiwan/SVG celebrate ties with agricultural exhibition

The silver Jubilee of the agricultural cooperation between this country and the Republic of China (Taiwan) was celebrated here with an agricultural exhibition at the Methodist Church Hall on Monday, October 29.{{more}}

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Ambassador of Taiwan Jack Cheng told the gathering that the 25th anniversary marks a significant milestone, since over the years, the Taiwanese mission and the Ministry of Agriculture have worked closely together and have had several successful projects. The first project started in 1982 with the introduction of a new species of pigs to farmers to improve the production process and to establish a better pig breeding centre.

“In 2001, the production of pork has become self sufficient for the market. This project has successfully been completed and transferred, so there is no need to import pork any more,” Cheng told the gathering.

Norgia Tucker, a farmer of Chateaubelair, also gave credit to the Taiwanese for the strong support that they have provided to local farmers. She said that she was one of the persons to benefit from the pig project, and is now the owner of a pig farm.

Treasurer of the Fancy Unit Farmers Cooperation Ivo Harry called on persons to continue in the agricultural sector.

Also addressing the gathering were the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Commerce and Trade Sir Louis Straker, Leader of the Opposition Arnhim Eustace, Minister of Agriculture Forestry and Fisheries Montgomery Daniel and Ivo Harry, Treasurer of the Fancy Unit Farmers Cooperation and Farm Manager.
