NBC/CBMP to host dub/rap for HIV competition

The state-owned National Broadcasting Corporation is assessing the 12 submissions for the NBC/CBMP dub/rap for HIV competition slated for the 17th November, 2007.{{more}}

At the close of registration on the 19th October, twelve entries were submitted for the competition, which aims to sensitise residents, particularly young people, about HIV.

NBC was one of five media entities in the region which won awards for HIV projects from the CBMP, a coalition of major broadcasters from across the Caribbean which has received funding from several major international partners, including the Kaiser Foundation, the Ford Foundation and the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

NBC is using the popular medium of dub/rap to develop specific messages in musical form for broadcasting during HIV programming. Winners will have opportunities to serve as youth ambassadors at HIV/AIDS events.

The programming will be made available rights-free to broadcast companies across the region as part of the CBMP’s regular distribution of quarterly programming packages for its broadcast membership.

The competition will be staged at the Kingstown Netball Centre on Saturday, 17th November, from 6 pm.

NBC has decided not to charge an admission fee, as the aim is to educate people about HIV. NBC has been receiving support locally from the National AIDS Secretariat, the Health Education Unit in the Ministry of Health and musician Junior Sutherland, Curriculum Officer in Music in the Ministry of Education.
