Guyana student tops in CSEC examinations

The Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) last week Thursday announced awards given for outstanding performance in the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations. The awards are based on criteria approved by the Council.{{more}}

The award for the most outstanding candidate overall goes to Wainella Isaacs of Queen’s College, Guyana. Wainella achieved Grade I in 13 subjects (including Agricultural Science Double Award) and Grade II in Physics. She also receives the award for the most outstanding performance in Science.

Another student from Queen’s College, Guyana, Arvindu Sukhram, will receive the award for outstanding performance in Business Education. Arvindu achieved Grade I in 11 subjects and Grade III in one subject. His Grade I subjects included six business subjects.

Lenmour Bell of Glenmuir High School, Jamaica, will receive the award for outstanding performance in Technical and Vocational subjects. Lenmour achieved Grade I in eight subjects, including three technical subjects, and Grade II in one subject.

The top award for the Humanities goes to Jaime Burgos of St John’s College, Belize. Jaime sat examinations for 13 subjects and obtained Grade I in all the subjects that he sat.

Another Jamaican student, Grace-Ann Collins of Ardenne High School, will receive the award for the best short story. The stimulus statement for the short story this year was: The phone rang once and stopped. This was it now.

The Council also gives awards for the best two-dimensional and three-dimensional pieces in the examinations for Visual Arts. Syanne Patterson of Queen’s College, Barbados, will receive the prize for the best two-dimensional piece with her three-fold brochure which highlights the dangers of deforestation. Owen Lloyd from the Tarrant High School, Jamaica, won the prize for the three-dimensional relief entitled ‘The Crossing’.

Queen’s College, Guyana, the school attended by the top candidate overall, will receive the School of the Year award.

The awards will be presented to the top students at the opening ceremony of the Annual Meeting of Council to be held in St Lucia on December 6, 2007.
