Former Deputy Police Commissioner laid to rest

The Royal St Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force has lost one of their finest.

Former Deputy Commissioner of Police, Theophilus Jackson died at age 72 on March 15 after a long illness.{{more}}

Jackson retired from the Police Force in 1990 and was among the first batch of recruits to enter the Regional Police Training School in 1956.

His funeral, which was held on Wednesday at the St George’s Cathedral with Methodist rites, saw scores of persons turning out to pay their final respects.

During his time in the Force, Jackson commanded the Central Division, Western Division and Administration Branches of the Police Force. But many will remember him for being an outstanding Traffic Cop.

Superintendent of Police Artis Davis recalled while he was a young man that he used to admire the way Jackson went about his traffic duties. Davis said that Jackson was one of the most vigilant traffic cops that he has ever seen.

Davis’ close association with Jackson came when Davis took up a post at the Administration department of the Police Force. He said even though Jackson was a serious individual and a disciplinarian, it was easy to work with him.

Retired, Jackson still played an instrumental role in helping to mould the nation, especially his Queen’s Drive community. He was an active member of the Queen’s Drive neighbourhood watch scheme and acted as a liaison with the police to report on matters affecting the community. Davis said, “I would like to see the police force embrace retired officers in a more meaningful way as they still have a contribution to make to the organisation and the country.”
