PM: Mr. Eustace is his own problem

Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves has dismissed calls made by the opposition New Democratic Party (NDP) that he should resign and call fresh elections.

“Which way are they going to have this resignation, how, I don’t understand it,” he mockingly said at a press conference yesterday.{{more}}

Dr Gonsalves said that there were only three ways that he would be out of office before the next scheduled election in 2010. He said it would take a vote of no confidence in parliament, a coup or his death.

“We just won an election fourteen months ago, so I don’t know what they talking about,” Dr Gonsalves told journalists on Monday.

Dr Gonsalves’ Unity Labour Party (ULP) government enjoys a commanding 12-3 advantage in Parliament. However the NDP boasts of solid support because they won 44 per cent of the popular vote in the December 2005

elections.

During a march and rally last week, the NDP led by Arnhim Eustace called on the prime minister to resign immediately. Accusing the Dr Gonsalves led Government of being in bed with drug lords and a series of corruptions and mismanagement allegations Eustace demanded fresh elections to the urging of his adoring supporters.

“I am not Mr. Eustace’s problem, Mr. Eustace is his own problem,” was Dr Gonsalves’ response on Monday as he called on the NDP to “behave themselves.”

He said that the NDP had to be satisfied with the opposition benches until the next elections, “they need to satisfy themselves with that.” he said.
