Schools compete for public speaking title

Bequia, yesterday, was host to the opening of this year’s Cable & Wireless sponsored Lion’s Club Public Speaking competition.

Today Friday, schools in Zone One would compete for a spot in the final carded for October 24 at the Kingstown Methodist Church Hall. Some $13,000 and a Dell Laptop are up for grabs.{{more}}

Participating schools in Zone One would speak on the topic “Is there any substance to the legacy benefits claimed for SVG arising from Cricket World Cup 2007?”, while Zone Two schools would address “The practice of promoting students who have not passed their school examinations affects the educational development of other children,” Zone three would look at “Twenty-five years of functional cooperation in the OECS means very little to many.” and Zone four, “Should government continue the practice of subsiding the price of petroleum products in SVG?”

President of the Lions Club South, Junior Bacchus, said the topics chosen are very challenging and thought provoking, which would create a level of rivalry in the debate.

Bacchus said following the preliminary round the six schools would be briefed on the topic for the final round of competition.

The Lions club president expressed his gratitude to Cable & Wireless for their sponsorship of the competition.

Cable & Wireless’ Chief Executive Daryl Jackson said his company is committed to the development of youth.

The competition, he said, would build self confidence among the young people which would help them apply the tools for effective communication for their educational purpose and personal development.

List of Schools in Zones:

Zone One: St. Vincent Girls’ High School, Bishop College Kingstown, JP Eustace Memorial High and the St. Clair Dacon Secondary.

Zone TWO; Bequia Seventh Day Adventist, Bequia Community High School , Camden Park Secondary, St. Vincent Grammar School and the Intermediate High.

Zone Three: St. Joseph’s Convent Marriaqua, Mountain View Academy, Emmanuel High Mespo, Georgetown Secondary and New Adelphi Secondary and the North Union Secondary School.

Zone Four: St. Martins Secondary, Barroullie Secondary, Troumaca Ontario, Secondary, Petit Bordel Secondary and the Union Island Secondary school.
