Barrouallie schools get $10,000 each

The Barrouallie Government School and the Barrouallie Anglican School received donations of $10,000 each.

The donations were made by Vincentian-born Clarence Derby and his associate Andy Westcott who reside in St. Martin. Derby, a former student of the Barrouallie Anglican School said that he would be forming a foundation to raise funds to assist the schools in Barrouallie and eventually the rest of the country.{{more}}

Speaking at the presentation ceremony this morning, Governor-General, Sir Frederick Ballantyne said that he was proud of the gesture as he has strong interests in the development of this country especially in the area of education. Sir Frederick further stated that to his knowledge this was the largest single donation ever made by an individual to a school in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Representative for the Central Leeward constituency, Sir Louis Straker also spoke at the ceremony. He said that many Vincentians complain about things in the country when they themselves are in a financial position to help make a change. He commended the men for their generosity and urged more Vincentians to follow suit.

Principal of the Barrouallie Anglican School, Mida Mason and of the Government School, Vedette Bulze accepted the cheque on behalf of the schools. Both principals stated that the money would be used to enhance their reading programmes and to provide additional furniture for the schools.
