Rose honoured by Reparation Movement

Secretary of Windward Island Farmers Association (WINFA), Renwick Rose has been at the forefront of nation building for quite a number of years now, and for all that he has done to uplift St. Vincent and the Grenadines, he was rewarded with a painting of himself.

Reigning Calypso Monarch and artist, Glenroy “Sulle” Caesar, did the painting for Rose on behalf of the Reparations Movement. Sulle said that he wanted to capture Rose in all his glory.{{more}}

He mentioned that he had redone the painting several times because he did not think the previous efforts captured the true essence of Rose. He thanked Rose for the contribution made in helping with black struggle. Caesar said that Rose inspired him in more than one way and wished him continued success.

The painting showed Rose in his early days as Editor of the Freedom newspaper, which was published from 1974 to 1980 and also Editor of the Justice newspaper from 1980 to 1989.

Addressing the gathering, Jomo Thomas of the Reparations Movement said that the painting was their way of saying thank you to a “man of class”. Thomas told SEARCHLIGHT that one cannot speak enough about Rose’s contribution to this nation, “When the history of St. Vincent and the Grenadines is written, no one can eclipse what he has done among farmers,” said Thomas.

The Reparations Movement, which came into existence last year, has as its main aim to raise the level of consciousness among black people and to enlighten them on the role played by indigenous people and also of the struggles of enslaved Africans.

The movement has seven members at present and they will be looking to attend a reparations conference in Ghana in August.
