Something fishy at Georgetown tonight

Once you are on mainland St. Vincent today, May 19, Georgetown is the place to be.

The Fisherman’s Day Committee continues its month of activities with a Fish Night tonight at Georgetown. The menu features Creole kingfish, roasted fish, bakes and fried fish, sweet and sour fish, fish cakes, and baked fish. The package also contains smoked whale, smoked blackfish, stewed blackfish, with boileen, barbeque fish, fish pizza and cornfish boul jowl to complete a variety.{{more}}

The rural town setting ensures that activities marking the celebration are spread.

Last Friday, an exhibition in capital city Kingstown saw a build-up of the festivities observed under the theme: “Responsible Fisheries for Food Security.”

The Committee has Leonard Charles as chairman with Angus Dennie, public relations officer.

The Committee has also chosen the slogan “More fish better de dish” to drive home the importance of fish in the diet.

The Exhibition also features smoked robin, dried salted plain tuna, smoked tuna, pickled tuna, fish samosas, sashimi, and fish pizza.

There were positive reviews from persons who tasted the dishes and some purchased products on sale at the newly refurbished Kingstown Fish Market.

Observances began with a Church service. A Fun Day at the Fish Market last Saturday heightened the intensity. Another highlight is a Talent Show which will be held in Kingstown next Friday at the Peace Memorial Hall.

On June 2 the Fish Night will move to Heritage Square in Kingstown.

The climax will be at Fisherman’s Day, June 5 at Calliaqua, where an outboard motor engine will be at stake for the top fisherman.

The nation’s children are also being included in the activities. They are being given opportunities to win prizes in several competitions that have been organized.

Primary schools are being invited to enter a poster competition before May 22, while their secondary school counterparts may exhibit their writing skills in an Essay competition.
