Community College hosts Career Day

Vincentian students can now embark on their chosen areas of study with some degree of confidence. They gained valuable insights into potential spheres of endeavour from a two-day Career Fair which ended yesterday Thursday.

The event, sponsored by the lone energy suppliers Vinlec, was staged at the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Community College. One of the organisers of the event, Kamilah Anderson, an Economics lecturer at the College stated that the exercise was “to enlighten students about various careers available.”{{more}}

“It’s a chance for them not only to further their academic knowledge, but to become aware of various careers or job opportunities,” Anderson pointed out.

A number of institutions had display booths at the function held at the Community College.

Those included National Promotions Investment Incorporated (NIPI), Discovery Works, Central Water and Sewerage Authority (CWSA), National Insurance Services (NIS), General Employees Cooperative Credit Union (GECCU), National Commercial Bank (NCB)/National Development Fund (NDF), Law Association, SVG Teachers’ College, SVG Technical College, Service Commissions, Hotel and Tourism Association, as well as Ministry of Tourism.

Mineva Glasgow, Deputy Director NIS, gave the keynote address. She compared conditions and environment of employment in the 60’s to the present times.

Vinlec’s Personnel Officer Phyllis James stressed the importance of Science and Engineering and urged students along that route. She noted that three per cent of students returning from University had studied Engineering.

Director of Colleges Dr. Veronica Marks saw the event as an opportunity for partnerships between the College, businesses and the society.

Students were also exposed to careers in Agriculture and Environment, Architecture, Accounting, Art, Medicine and Finance.

Additionally, students got first hand tips on resume writing, and interviews by Rotary Club of St. Vincent.
