Scotland Yard to Return

Scotland Yard detectives are expected to return to St. Vincent and the Grenadines in another week’s time. By that time, they would have examined some forensic evidence they took with them relating to the death of former Press Secretary and Personal Aide to the Prime Minister, Glenn Jackson.

A meeting held last Wednesday March 22 with British High Commissioner Duncan Taylor should have paved the way for the return of the Scotland Yard officers.

Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves revealed that information last Tuesday at a Press conference.

Dr. Gonsalves noted that “a lot of good work has been done so far,” but he was reluctant to give any details about the progress of the investigations.

According to him, the Scotland Yard investigators were “high in praise for the work of the local team.” He however stated that “further lines of inquiry” had to be followed.

Dr. Gonsalves was cautious about the investigations:

“You cannot conduct a criminal investigation by way of press releases and giving information of a nature which may satisfy a prurient press, but which may well be counter-productive to the central focus, to find the killer of Glenn Jackson,” Dr. Gonsalves said.

The Prime Minister, a lawyer with over 25 years experience at the local Bar, added: “My objective is for us to find the killer, have him/her or them convicted and under the process of the law, apply the penalties which the law hands down.”

Glenn Jackson, according to the Prime Minister in his tribute at the funeral service March 15, “died at the hands of an assassin’s bullet.”

Jackson, aged 44, distinguished himself in a number of areas. He was regarded as a pioneer in Radio Talk Show. Jackson was found in his vehicle Monday March 6 on the Cane Garden road, about one minute’s drive from his residence.

He died from a single bullet to the chest. There was an outpouring of grief by a large cross section of the population, which turned out to celebrate Jackson’s life at the funeral service last Wednesday.

A $100,000 reward has been offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for Jackson’s death.

The figure was doubled from the previous $50,000 announced by the government following the March 6 discovery of Jackson’s body.

Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves disclosed that the National Commercial Bank (NCB) contributed the additional money.
