Meanwhile, Top Male Performer Troy Eustace who attained 19 A’s, 11 B’s and 3 C’s also has dreams of studying medicine. The 17-year-old said that he has a passion to help others and is working diligently to achieve this goal.

His mother Veronica Eustace, who was also present, said that although she pushes her son to excel, she admires his humorous nature. She said that as a single mother she wishes the best for her son and would always advise him to give his education and not the girls first priority. The two top performers received an X-net Unit and two years of free internet from Cable & Wireless.

Also in winners’ row were Kimberly Cambridge of the Girls’ High School who got the top spot in Humanities; Raquel Frederick also of the Girls’ High School received the award for Business Subjects; Candida Da Silva of Girls’ High copped the Science award and Adrian Boyea of the Barrouallie Secondary was top in the Technical Vocational Subjects.

The school with the best results was the St.Vincent Girls’ High School, the Most Improved Results came from the Barrouallie Secondary. Calicia Charles of the Girls’ High School received an award for Outstanding Performance.

In the Primary School Division, Jaya Debnath of the New Grounds Primary School received a prize for placing first in the Common Entrance Exam, while Simone Veira of the Windsor Primary School and Wenesha Edwards of the Marriaqua Government School were awarded for their second place tie.

Shaquan Roberts and Lorenzo Bacchus of the Lodge Village Primary School received awards for placing first and second in the School Leaving Exams, while Jahshem Henry of the C.W. Prescod Primary School received the third prize.

Addressing the ceremony, Chief Education Officer Susan Dougan said that teaching styles have to be adapted to match the learning abilities of children so that more children could excel.

Also advocating the need for children to be taught using different teaching styles was Minister of Education Girlyn Miguel who stressed that no longer should the curriculum be narrow. She emphasised that effective teaching styles and a well-rounded curriculum should instead adequately prepare students for the challenges of today’s world.

Minister Miguel said that to motivate the secondary students, those who were successful in five or more subjects would receive $500, while A’level graduates with two or more subjects, with General Paper included, would receive a similar cash reward.

The Education Minister’s comments were also received favourably when she announced that more rewards were to come for students who did well.
