Sir Frederick assists students

Three former Layou government school students will be going about secondary education with some stress eased off their parents. The trio, all girls, were successful in the recent examinations and have been rewarded for their efforts with some monetary assistance.{{more}}
Natalie Jack, a Buccament Bay resident, will get a second chance at secondary education. She was one of three successful students who wrote the School Leaving Examination and will enter the Bethel High School. Natalie receives the Dr. Geoff Edwards Scholarship. She had grades of 69 for health and family life, 64 for English, 53 for social studies, 45 for general science and 40 for math.
Christine Joseph placed 187th for girls and 308th overall with grades 70 in English, 59 general paper and 54 in math.
Joseph has been awarded the Mr. and Mrs. Mack Richards Scholarship. She enters the Girls’ High School when the school year begins Sepmtember 6.
The other bursary, sponsored by Mr. and Mrs. Damien Jackson, went to Kerona Samuel. She had grades of 60 each in math and English and 55 in general paper. She placed 236 for girls and 380th overall. Samuel will enter the St. Joseph Convent Kingstown.
The three students, supported by their mothers, received their first year’s cheques at Government House last Monday from Governor General Sir Frederick Ballantyne. The scholarships are worth $1,000 a year for each student.
Sir Frederick pointed out to the students, their mothers and past principal Sonia Nanton, the importance of discipline and high standard of work during their school careers. The scholarships will only be maintained if the students keep up a certain level of performance in class.
Nine other students will also benefit through Sir Frederick’s contacts. The other nine students will get $400 to help defray costs associated with their education.
The entire assistance package was arranged through friends of Sir Frederick based overseas. Sir Frederick hails from the Central Leeward town of Layou. He has maintained interest in his hometown and has given a lot to the Layou Primary School and the Layou community on a whole.
