SOSVG targets EC$350,000 for World Summer Games

Special Olympics SVG (SOSVG) is on mission to send a team to participate at the World Summer Games, set for March 14- 21, in Abu Dhabi, next year.

Hence, SOSVG is on a “Take us to the world – Journey to Abu Dhabi”, fund-raising expedition, for the group of Special Olympians and officials to make the trip.

“To be able to achieve this, we will need the assistance of the general public, businesses, organzations and individuals, both in St Vincent and the Grenadines and in the diaspora, to raise the EC$350,000,” national director of Special Olympics SVG Sezevra Joseph declared.

Following the launch of the fund-raising drive, which began with a Tag Day earlier this month, other events aimed at realizing the target are planned, according to Joseph.

The SOSVG national director listed another Tag Day, a dinner and a fair, as the already confirmed events.

Joseph noted that the fund-raising is ongoing throughout the year.

At the 2019 World Summer Games, St Vincent and the Grenadines will be represented by 27 athletes and 11 officials.

Five sporting disciplines – athletics, bocce, football, swimming and tennis would have participation of the Vincentian contingent.

When this country attended the 2015 World Summer Games, which were held in California, USA, the Vincentian team’s performance was considered excellent, as they returned with 19 medals in their grasp.

The medal count included four gold, nine silver, five bronze and a fourth place ribbon.

And, St Vincent and the Grenadines wants to be part of the history making 2019 Special Olympics World Summer Games, as it would be the first time that the quadrennial exercise would be held in the Middle East.

But this can only be achieved by the generosity of others, who, through their monetary donations and in kind, make the trip for the Vincentians possible.
