Nine beauties vie for Miss Rural pageant crown

All attention is expected to turn to the Southern Grenadine island of Canouan beginning today, for the annual carnival festivities.

The revelry will kick off with the Carnival Lime, scheduled to take place at the Canouan Hard Court.{{more}}

Then on Saturday, local soca artistes such as reigning ragga and power soca monarch Fireman Hooper, Mad Skull, Royal, Demus, Alla G, Wetty B and Affiene, among others, will be featured at Soca 360, also at the hard court.

The reigning rural carnival queens will have their moment in the spotlight during the Miss Rural SVG pageant on Sunday, with Miss Central Leeward Brean Gloster, Miss North Leeward Osheca Edwards, Miss Northern Grenadines Veronique Browne, Miss P’Tani Solange Fernandez, Miss South Central Windward Orecia Glasgow, Miss South Leeward Kimberly Shepherd, Miss South Windward Joslin Frank, Miss Southern Grenadines Fernella Frederick, and Miss St George Niesha Richards vying for the prestigious title.

Shellica Nanton, Miss North Windward 2013, won last year’s pageant.

Former ragga soca monarch Skarpyon, along with Keido Foster and the band Vikings will also be featured at the show.

The action continues on July 28 with Night Mas, which will see paraders moving from Grand Bay to Bachelor’s Hall and back to Grand Bay.

Kiddies Carnival will take place the following day at the hard court, followed by the All White Affair on July 30, Wet Fete on July 31, J’Ouvert and Street Jam on August 1, and Carnival Tabanka on August 2.

The Canouan carnival activities are being coordinated by Club Nuevo, who are in their 16th year of organising the event.(JJ)
