The ‘Art of Belonging’

The ‘Art of Belonging’

Next Friday, December 23, the curtains will come down on the “Art of Belonging,” an outstanding showcase of 67 pieces of art being exhibited at the Russell’s Mall.

The display is the 3rd Annual exhibition of the graduates of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Community College A’level Art and Design Programme.{{more}}

The six students, Leytisha Jack, Narissa Herbert, Zzevan Alexander, Rose-Marie Lewis, Rachel Bailey and Abigail Haynes, according to Art Lecturer, Vonnie Roudette, “have secured the highest grades so far on the programme.”

The pieces on display are the actual submissions made by the students to United Kingdom based examining body, Cambridge, for grading. The six students were awarded grades ranging from A to C, with A being the highest grade and E being the lowest passing grade.

According to exhibitor Abigail Haynes, the response from the public has been good, but she added that were it not for the elections, she suspects the response would have been better. She also expressed her regret that representatives from the Government have so far not come to see their work. Despite this, several pieces priced at between $350 and $1200 have been sold. 2006 Calendars featuring the graduates’ work are also on sale for $20 each.

Young Haynes, who aspires to be an architect or fashion designer, uses mixed media to express her creativity. Her creations in the exhibition fall under two themes, “shadows” and a study of older local architecture compared with newer designs.
