Why do people have so much to say about me?

Hey Rosie,

I am really popular in High School. I hang with the girls and the fellas too. I actually like hanging with the guys more than the girls too. I am hearing from other people that some girls are calling me a slut because I have so many guy friends. Rosie, they don’t know me and why do they have my name in their mouth? Someone even called my mother to say that I hang out with too many guys, (even though I have many girls in my circle too). My mom defended me because she knows my friends. What really bothered me is that the lady that called is one of my friends’ mom. Why are people hating on me, Rosie, when I try to be open and cool with everyone?{{more}}

Can’t trust people

Dear Can’t trust people,

Well, I have to tell you that this is a shame. In my opinion, you sound like a perfectly happy and well-balanced young lady. What happens is that people are not always open to people like you, who are very popular and open with so many people — even adults who should know better.

I was happy to hear that your mother seems to know what you are up too. She also seems to be aware of your friends and your movements — this is so very important. Not only for your safety, but to know the different personalities that you are around, so she can advise you about being safe as well. When your actions are open and in the light, your parents and loved ones can play an active role in terms of guiding you in your actions.

Once you know that you are conducting yourself with respect and also respecting your family’s high standards, you will never be able please everyone. So, if you can say “yes” to these questions, you can hold your head high and continue to be the warm and friendly person that you are. Remember it’s those people who lead their lives in a different manner, someone who shows a warm, inclusive and respectful spirit, who sometimes also have their actions questioned. Keep your head high and never let those negative comments or people keep you back. There is a lot of good for you to do in this life; continue to soar.
