My co-worker sexually harasses me

Hey Rosie,

I enjoy your column every week and I have a quick question. I am an attractive woman who works in a predominantly male environment. I get along with everyone, but there is this one guy who keeps making suggestive and sexual comments about my body and what he would like to do. I ignore him and brush it off, but it’s getting worse.{{more}} What he does is he waits until we are alone working on a project or in the lunch room and will make these very uncomfortable statements; he has never done this with anyone else around. Rosie, I broke down and told my husband and he told me to go the HR representative for our company, because it is sexual harassment. My husband has given me two weeks to do so and if not, he will approach this man himself! I don’t want that, Rosie, and I am afraid to lodge this complaint because this man is well respected in my company. What should I do?

He makes my skin crawl!

Dear He makes my skin crawl!

Well, he is making my blood boil! No, no, no, no, no! You have to put a stop to this immediately! You should never ever have to put up with this type of behaviour from anyone and, to make matters worse, a co-worker? Oh this is ridiculous!

I am so happy you told your husband, who has thrown his support behind you 100 per cent and hasn’t doubted you either. He is also correct in saying that you should go to the HR rep. Let’s not have him take matters into his hands, because that would become a whole other legal issue! No one should ever have to put up with this nonsense and this is why there are major rules and regulations in the workplace to prevent this type of behaviour from happening.

Start documenting dates and occurrences, then go and present your case to HR. You never know, he may be doing the same thing to someone else and they are perhaps also sweeping this under a rug. So, I am asking you to please stand up for yourself and do what is right. No one should ever get away with this. I am not saying that this is going to be easy, but I am saying that you ARE doing the right thing. Fight back; this is NOT right!

Rosie
