Smart thinking from Haliborange

15.SEP.06

It has been suggested that children’s dietary intake of Omega-3 may be related to their mental performance and concentration levels particularly during their school years, where children are facing more exams and expected to do well.

Every parent wants the best start in life for their child but more distractions are preventing their ability to concentrate which can ultimately affect their performance at school.{{more}}

Feed their brain

Sixty per cent of the brain structure is fat and is vitally important for brain health. The fats required by the brain are called Omega-3, a group of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, which contain the nutrients DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid) and EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid) and are found naturally in fish oils. DHA is an important component of the brain making up 25% of fat material and it therefore plays a key role in maintaining healthy brain function and concentration levels. DHA is the most important nutrient in the brain after water.

When we learn something new, our brain cells send messages to one another. High levels of Omega-3 increase the fluidity of cell membranes and speed the transfer of electrical signals between brain cells. Omega-3 also assists in the development of new connections. Effectively DHA fills the gaps around the brain cells allowing communication to be passed more quickly.

Give them a head start

There is evidence that lack of Omega-3 inhibits development of intelligence. A recent study carried out in the UK looked at the Omega-3 intake of 14,000 pregnant women. The study found that those women who did not consume much Omega-3 during pregnancy gave birth to offspring which when tested for IQ, showed a 6 point deficit compared to children born to mothers with a good Omega-3 intake.

Brain food

The Omega-3 required for brain development cannot be made naturally in the body, and can only be obtained through diet. For generations, fish has long been known as brain food because of its rich source of long-chain Omega-3 fatty acids.

Oily fish such as mackerel, salmon and sardines are rich in such fatty acids, however, the diets of many children today do not include enough of these in their daily diet.

For those children who are not keen on the taste of fish there is an alternative. Haliborange Omega-3 for Kids is a range of supplements, specially formulated for children, that combines Omega-3 fish oil and important A,C,D and E vitamins, which help maintain healthy growth and development. Haliborange Omega-3 is available in two delicious flavours, orange and blackcurrant in a unique chewy fruit burst capsule.

By giving children Haliborange Omega-3 for Kids every day as part of a healthy diet you could help them physically, mentally, and at school.
