Today is VAT-Free shopping day!
Consumers will be able to take advantage of a VAT-free shopping day on Friday, August 28, but unlike the initiative held in December, the tax exemption will be limited to four broad categories of goods. Comptroller of the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) Kelvin Pompey, explained the differences between the two initiatives during an interview on NBC Radio on Wednesday, August 26,2026 as the department made final preparations for today’s shopping exercise.

The VAT-Free day is specifically aimed at assisting consumers with back-to-school shopping ahead of the reopening of schools on September 7, and is part of the commitment given by the Godwin Friday administration aimed at easing the cost of living burden on the population.
The four categories covered are groceries, non-alcoholic beverages, school supplies and toiletries. Pompey explained that the categories are broad and include a range of everyday items.
