Bequia getting renovated fish market
Fisherfolk and consumers on Bequia will be doing business in a rehabilitated fish market, which Prime Minister Godwin Friday, said will bring possibilities to the community and solve many issues faced by fisherfolk from the Northern Grenadines.
This Bequia Fish Market is being rehabilitated under the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Commission Biodiversity Support Programme for ACP (African, Caribbean and Pacific) Coastal Environments (BioSPACE), and funded by the European Union (EU).
During the official launch of the project on Tuesday, August 25, 2026 it was noted that the fish market project is being implemented under the leadership of the Ministry of Fisheries, Marine and Land Conservation and Climate Resilience through a $3.2 million European Union grant. Speaking at the launch, Prime Minister Friday said the government is grateful for the grant and noted that the former administration was involved in negotiations, “and we completed the process and have started getting the work done to deliver for the fisherfolk here in this community”.
He said the project is being done “not just for something to look good” but to last and benefit the community.
“We have very limited resources, so when we build now, we have to make sure we build to last…this is progress,” Dr Friday noted, adding that the facility will have cold storage capacity and other facilities that will aid in better handling of seafood, and to treat fisherfolk as valuable contributors to the economy.
