Vincentians celebrate African Heritage
The Department of Culture is regarding this year’s Emancipation Month celebrations as presenting an opportunity for Vincentians to reflect on their African heritage, celebrate their cultural identity and strengthen appreciation for the nation’s history. The month-long programme that runs from August 1 to 31 under the theme, “Embracing Our Past; Forging Ahead in the Future,” will feature a range of cultural activities aimed at engaging Vincentians of all ages.
Director of Culture Maxine Browne, speaking with the API on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, encouraged Vincentians to participate in the celebrations and show pride in the country’s African heritage.
The launch activity for Emancipation Month took place on Saturday, August 1, at Independence Park (Victoria Park), Kingstown, with participants assembling at Heritage Square before making their way to the venue in a colourful parade that blended with musicians on traditional musical instruments. Browne had encouraged citizens to attend the launch dressed in African attire or the national colours of St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) as the country commemorated its cultural heritage. The parade at Independence Park (Victoria Park) showcased a range of activities including cultural performances.
