PM urges VINLEC to be mindful of consumers
Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Godwin Friday, is urging the St. Vincent Electricity Services Limited (VINLEC) to be mindful of consumers as Vincentians continue to complain about rising electricity bills.
Speaking on NBC Radio on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, Friday acknowledged the financial strain that increasing electricity costs is placing on householders and businesses, particularly those already struggling to make ends meet.
“When VINLEC prices go up, essentially the surcharge is passed on to consumers and to businesses,” the Prime Minister said. He said he empathizes with those facing financial hardship.
“I…have total sympathy with the families who are struggling to make ends meet because of increasing energy prices,” Friday said, adding that he understands why consumers have been voicing their concerns and he believes the public’s response should encourage the electricity company, a state-owned entity, to improve its operations.
“I understand that the consumers are complaining and they’re quite right to do so, and that pressure will put some more emphasis on urgency for VINLEC to also find efficiencies within their own systems,” he added.
