Schools reopening pushed back one week
THE Ministry of Education,Vocational Training, Innovation, Digital Transformation and Information in St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) has pushed back the reopening date of schools for the 2026/2027 academic year by one week. This is to allow parents and guardians to take advantage of the government’s second VAT-Free Day before students return to the classroom. Schools were originally scheduled to reopen on Monday, August 31, but classes will now commence on Monday, September 7, following the adjustment announced by the ministry.
The change comes ahead of a VAT-Free Day approved by Cabinet for Friday, August 28, 2026 which is intended to assist families with the cost of preparing children for the new school year.
Speaking on SVGTV, Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Legal Affairs & Justice, Economic Planning and Private Sector Development, Godwin Friday said the initiative forms part of the government’s efforts to ease the financial burden on parents and guardians during the backto-school period. “There will be no VAT on all school supplies, groceries…and anything related to getting them ready for school,” the prime minister said.
