Road work programme begins amidst controversy
THE 2026 SUMMER ROAD CLEANING PROGRAMME began yesterday, Monday August 3, 2026 amidst controversy regarding the location of the registration process, and allegations that the programme is being completely politicized under the new administration.
This year, the government is spending approximately EC$3.29 million to fund the programme that is administered by the Buildings, Roads and General Services Authority (BRAGSA). It runs for eight days, August 3 to 12, 2026, and is said to be employing over 6,600 people throughout St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG).
The issue with the programme this year is that people were told to go to some constituency offices of the New Democratic Party (NDP) to register, a move Opposition Leader Ralph Gonsalves, described as inappropriate. The Opposition Leader stressed that the decision by the government to call for people to register for the annual road cleaning programme at NDP constituency offices and not at government establishments was unacceptable.
