Chanique takes calypso crown at first try
Chanique Rogers-Bailey was on Sunday, July 5, crowned Calypso Monarch 2026, at Independence Park (formerly Victoria Park) in her first attempt entering the competition.
Roger-Bailey, who sang with the Dynamites Calypso Tent in New York, might just have created history as the first to make it straight to the monarchy in her first attempt.
She was one of four newcomers who this year made it to the finals in the senior Calypso competition.
While not new to the stage, but new to calypso, Rogers-Bailey, with her calypso ‘Lift Me Up’, told SEARCHLIGHT after the crowning that she was “blank, like I don’t even know how I feel. I know I’m happy, I’m excited”.
While elated, she was also emotional because her biggest supporter, her mom, was not there to share in the celebrations.
