IMF official recommends modernised energy legislation for SVG
THE INTERNATIONAL Monetary Fund (IMF) has concluded that a transition to renewable energy could significantly lower energy costs for households and firms across St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG), and build resilience against volatile oil prices.
“A key measure is replacing old diesel generators with solar energy. This would boost competitiveness and promote growth and employment, especially for women.
“To enable solar energy development, the electricity legislation needs to be modernized,” IMF economist Sergei Antoshin, said at a press briefing at Cabinet Room last week Tuesday, April 28,2026.
Antoshin was commenting at the end of a visit to SVG from April 21 to 28 and was held so that the IMF’s 2026 Article IV consultation could take place.
