Housing Minster lists issues impeding their work
The Ministry of Housing is said to have inherited several issues from the former administration that are currently hampering the way it functions.
This was the assessment of Minister of Housing, Land Management, Urban Development, and Informal Settlement Upgrading Andrew John who said at the April 21, 2026 meeting of the House of Assembly that because of some of these issues, the ministry for this year will focus mainly on retrofitting and rehabilitation.
He said also that the system of payment to people who do work for the ministry has changed and now, all payments must go through the treasury department, while the housing assessors attached to the Ministry of Housing are being given additional training that is expected to create a tighter ship.
“…we are on track in a more responsible manner, so much so that I was informed we no longer, at Housing, are able to make direct payments. Everything now must go through the treasury system, proper accountability,” the Minister said as he responded to a question, while adding that has got rid of the possibility of “people signing up anything”.
