Government back-pedals on Constitution
THE NEW DEMOCRATIC PARTY administration of Dr. Godwin Friday, has pulled back from presenting a bill to Parliament to amend the Representation of the People (RPA) Act, and this country’s Constitution.
The Bills were listed on the Order Paper as numbers 5 and 6 for the sitting of Tuesday, April 21, 2026.
In an earlier interview with the Agency for Public Information, Dr. Friday indicated that the Government would take a different course of action and have the Bills go before Select Committees to obtain public feedback.
“Madam Speaker, we have had a very long and productive day in this Honourable House, and we recognise that there are two items on the Order Paper to be dealt with. Our position is, Madam Speaker, that these matters, they are important, broadly important to the public discourse. We are intending to address these matters, the amendment of the Representation of the People Act and the Constitution of St.Vincent and the Grenadines in the way that we have put in the draft legislation,” Dr. Friday said in Parliament on Tuesday.
