Constitution, RPA amendment Bills battle lines drawn
ASTHE GOVERNMENT prepares to table a constitutional amendment Bill to Parliament today, April 21, 2026, this country’s Opposition is mobilising support in support of its position that the government’s intended move undermines the Constitution of St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG), as well as the judiciary.
At a news conference on Star Radio on Monday, April 20, 2026, Opposition Leader, Dr. Ralph Gonsalves identified the Caribbean Community among a list of entities to whom he has written on the matter, as he indicated that once the New Democratic Party administration proceeds to take the Bill to Parliament, the opposition will mount a multi-pronged push-back using all available means.
The controversial constitutional amendment, and a Bill to amend the Representation of the People Act are listed on the Order Paper for today’s meeting of the House of Assembly.
They are listed as Bills numbers 5 and 6: Representation of the People (Amendment) Bill 2026; and Constitution of St Vincent and the Grenadines (Amendment)Bill 2026.
