The multilateral system undermined-Dr Gonsalves
LEADER of the Opposition, Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, at a press conference yesterday, January, 5 2026, commented on “the matter in Venezuela and the presence of President Nicolas Maduro in NewYork, facing certain charges brought by the federal authorities in the United States of America”.
He pointed to the complex relationship between the USA, St Vincent and the Grenadines and Venezuela and warned against conflating military intervention with law enforcement. Dr Gonsalves also stressed the need for maintaining clarity without causing divisiveness within the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) which issued a statement following the US attack on Venezuela on January, 3 2025 during which President Nicolas Maduro and his wife were abducted.
Regarding the CARICOM statement, Dr. Gonsalves said, “Some persons may say that we should go even much further, but bear in mind that I say I want us in this region to see how we can use our sober judgment to see if we can get a resolution”.
