NDP’s bonus falls short of the promised double salary – Dr Gonsalves
PRIME MINISTER Dr. Godwin Friday has promised that at some point in January, 2026, some public servants will receive double pay, while others will receive a bonus on their pay salaries and wages.
However, Opposition Leader Dr. Ralph Gonsalves contends that what was announced is a “double salary” for all public servants, and not a bonus as is now being said.
The money comes as part of the New Democratic Party’s (NDP) 60-day plan aimed at tackling what the new administration describes as a cost-of-living crisis, but while it is welcomed by most, it falls short of the promised double salary for “every” public servant that was mentioned during the 2025 general elections.
Speaking on Friday, December 19, 2025 in Kingstown during the country’s first ever Value Added Tax (VAT) free day, Dr. Friday said that “most” public servants will receive double pay, but, it will be “skewered towards those persons at the lower end” as the idea is to give the greater benefit to the persons who are “feeling the pinch more”, and are on the lower end of the government’s pay scale.
