Children’s Issues headline May

Last Friday, May 2, 2025, students from several primary, secondary, and pre-schools were engaged in the launch of Child Month activities under the theme: ‘Keep us safe, strong and free. We are children, let us be.’

The month of activities is again being spear headed by the National Association of Early Childhood Educators in collaboration with a number of stakeholders.

The launch of the month of activities took place at the Arnos Vale church of the Nazarene.

Speaking on NBC Radio’s ‘Morning Cup’ programme, Verdessa Browne, Head of the 2025 Child Month Expo Committee; and Pastor Adrian Massiah, President of the National Association of Early Childhood Educators, outlined that the aim is to raise awareness around issues affecting children.

The first activity will be held on May 7, when pre-schools across the nation are expected to join in church services in their 13 districts. Friday, May 16, will witness a march from the Vegetable Market in Kingstown at 9:00 a.m, ending at Victoria Park for an exhibition which was introduced as part of the 2024 Child Month programme of activities.

“The feedback we got was very great. It was different and unique, so this year we are doing it again,” Browne said.

This year, organisers are partnering for the expo with the World Paediatric Project to showcase various services from which children and their parents can benefit; the Ministry of National Mobilisation; Ministry of Education, displaying programmes from some of its units (Adult and Continuing Education and PEARL); as well as the Ministry of Health.

“While the parents are going around having access to the different booths to get information, there will be giveaways from some of the sponsors. We are planning to incorporate some games and little competitions between the children,” Browne said.

Children’s Day will be celebrated on Thursday, May 22, during the final week, referred to as the ‘main week,’ which will have a packed programme of activities including career and health fairs. From May 19 to 23, each district will host activities, and some will team up to host the fairs.
