Two women among six held in GECCU attempted robbery

A BRAZEN ROBBERY attempt was thwarted around 3 p.m. on Tuesday, July 16, 2024 by Georgetown police officers and residents of South Rivers when the robbers had their eyes set on the South Rivers branch of the General Employees Co-operative Credit Union (GECCU).

At a press conference the following day, Wednesday July 17, 2024, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of crime, Trevor Bailey, said he was filled with gratitude for the assistance of the residents who helped the police take six people into custody, preventing them from making off with that which they do not own.

“It only goes to show that when the community works with law enforcement, coupled together, we can achieve a lot of things.”

He then urged other communities which know of criminal activities taking place to speak up.

“If you share the information, then we have a duty to act on that information. We will have, and we will achieve together, a lot of things.”

The Deputy Commissioner disclosed that the Royal St Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force has six persons in custody assisting with investigations, two of whom are female. He detailed that the suspects are from the Central Kingstown, South, and Central Leeward constituencies and are between 22 and 28 years old.

Bailey said the suspects opened fire on police officers who were in the vicinity of the credit union, and the police returned fire. He said no one was injured during

the exchange, but some were injured due to apprehension, but Bailey assured that “all of the persons who would have sustained injuries would have been taken to the different medical facility to receive medical attention”.

A similar robbery took place at the Barrouallie branch of the Teachers Co-operative Credit Union on Friday, May 10, 2024, where the robbers used a vehicle to escape after stealing an undisclosed amount of money from the financial institution.
