Bequia Waterfront is Best Lit Community

In the Grenadines, theft of Christmas lights almost threatened to derail the participation of the Bequia group, ‘Almond Tree,’ in the Best Lit Community competition. ​​

The group dethroned 10-year winners, Point Village and committee member, Desiree Davis told SEARCHLIGHT the victory was as a result of more than four months of planning and hard work by the 12-member team.

The ‘Welcome to Bequia’ display included a story book display titled ‘The Splash of Christmas’, a nativity scene, Christmas trees, Santas, a lettered BEQUIA sign as well as rope lights on the almonds tree – some of which were stolen and left the team scrambling to replace them.

“Somebody stole a whole barrel of our rope lights so we had to replace all of them. We had to try to raise funds to buy them,” Davis said, adding donations from small businesses on the island helped to offset some of the costs.

“In the end it was absolutely worth it. I don’t think when we were getting it all done that we were thinking ‘we have to win’. We never had that expectation, we just wanted to do our best.”

Davis said she considers the tradition of lighting up an integral part of community spirit during the holidays and she hopes that more people, especially the younger generation will continue to see the value in it.

Second for Best Lit Community went to Rose Hall, Point Village came in third and Sion Hill Intersection was awarded fourth position.
