Women’s group to spearhead Friday’s city march

The National Council of Women (NCW) is spearheading a march this Friday, to bring attention to issues facing women and children.

Beverley Richards, president of the NCW, said the march will begin at 4:30 p.m. from Heritage Square and the proposed route is along Bay Street, up Back Street, then back to Heritage Square.

She said the marchers hope to make several laps around the route, with the different laps representing their concern for domestic violence; sexual assault; rape; children who have been molested and sexually abused; and the rights of women.

Richards said several women’s rights organizations will participate in the

march and she called on the public to join them.

“The ultimate goal is to stop sexual violence before it begins. This campaign is not about politics or any individual. It is about the violation of the rights of the woman. In every situation or act of violence, all parties are affected. Come out and join the campaign, because one woman’s cry is all women’s cry.”

SEARCHLIGHT understands that similar activities to bring attention to the rights of women in St Vincent and the Grenadines are being held on Friday and Saturday in Toronto, Montreal, New York and London.
