Man accused of making threats to magistrate appears in court today

A man who is alleged to have used threatening language in relation to the life of a magistrate will appear at the Kingstown Magistrate’s Court today.

Wade ‘Bat’ Grant, a 46-year-old resident of South Rivers, who is charged with using threatening language towards Magistrate Rickie Burnett was brought before the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday, to answer the charge.

Magistrate Burnett did not read the charge to Grant, but instructed him to appear before the Kingstown Magistrate’s Court, today, Tuesday at 9 am.

Grant stands accused of making threats directed at Burnett some time after he was convicted on Thursday, November 2 of damaging the property of his ex-girlfriend of nine years, Selma Toney.

Grant was ordered by Burnett to pay compensation of $2,300 to Toney.

On August 3, sometime after 4 a.m., Toney, who was staying at a house not too far from her home, saw Grant heading in the direction of her house with a cutlass in his hand.

She was later alerted to go to her home as items in her house had been chopped and destroyed.

Grant was found guilty of the offence and in addition to being ordered to pay compensation, he was given a 12-month custodial sentence, suspended for 18 months.

On November 6, it was brought to the attention of Magistrate Burnett, that threats were being made to his life.

The matter was reported to the Colonaire Police Station and investigations carried out into the matter resulted in Grant being charged.(CJ)
