Prisoner injured during melée on prison grounds

One prisoner is currently recovering, after being attacked by another inmate at the Her Majesty’s Prisons in Kingstown.

SEARCHLIGHT understands that a prisoner was stabbed on Monday morning during a fight over marijuana that had allegedly been thrown over the walls of the correctional facility the night before.

According to our source, who was present at the institution at the time of the fight, the contraband did not land where it was supposed to and was seized by someone for whom it was not intended.

The source told SEARCHLIGHT that a fight broke out and one inmate was stabbed with a sharpened piece of steel by another. The injured prisoner had to be rushed to the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital for medical attention.

Superintendent of Prison Brenton Charles confirmed on Thursday that an incident took place at about 8 a.m. on Monday on the prison grounds.

“I could say that something did happen, and the police are conducting some investigations…”

However, Charles said he would not divulge any information about the incident, as it would not be helpful to the case.

“It’s not going to be helpful to the case if I say what happened. It is a matter that the police would be dealing with and I would like to say as little as possible about it,” he explained.

Charles indicated that the injured prisoner was recovering and doing “quite ok”.

On Monday, when SEARCHLIGHT visited the prison, it was in a state of lockdown and visitors were not permitted on the grounds.

Charles, however, noted that the prison has since returned to a state of normalcy.(CM)
