Bequia man charged with murder of Questelles resident

Julian Adams, a 36-year-old resident of Lower Bay, Bequia was yesterday charged with the murder of Brendon Goodgie of Questelles.

Goodgie, 59 years old, died at the Port Elizabeth Hospital in Bequia on Monday at around 2:10 p.m., after being involved in an altercation at the harbour.

A police source told SEARCHLIGHT that Goodgie, a watchman attached to the vegetable market in Port Elizabeth, was involved in an altercation with another man, which took place at the harbour at around 11:15 a.m on Monday.

Reports are that during the altercation, Goodgie stabbed the man and after being stabbed, the wounded man left the scene and returned with a piece of wood, at which time he struck Goodgie in the face. Goodgie was knocked unconscious and fell into the sea. He was rescued from the water and taken to the hospital by an ambulance. He later succumbed to his injuries.

When contacted, Goodgie’s family refused to talk to the media.

Yesterday, at the Serious Offences Court, Adams was not allowed to enter a plea, as the charge is indictable.

However, investigating officer Corporal 643 Quow, who is attached to the Major Crimes Unit, asked for a four-month adjournment and said he expects 13 witnesses to testify in the case.

A preliminary inquiry into the matter is scheduled for July 3, 2016.

This is the second murder in the Goodgie family in less than one year, as another family member, Wilmore “Tally” Goodgie, was shot in Paul’s Avenue on Saturday, May 21, 2016.

Wilmore was shot during a daring daylight shooting, which took place around 4 p.m. in the vicinity of the St Vincent Electricity Services (VINLEC) at Paul’s Avenue. After being shot, Wilmore ran until he fell in the public road behind the Girl Guides’ Headquarters at Level Gardens. He later died at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital (MCMH).

Wilmore’s murder was the 13th for 2016, while Brendon’s killing is the third this year.
