‘This is not going to stop me’ – Charles

Deborah Charles, the Unity Labour Party’s (ULP) candidate for West Kingstown, says the recent act of vandalism on her car in the wee hours of Monday morning is undoubtedly politically motivated.

Despite this, the Lowmans Leeward resident, who lives just opposite the Anglican School, {{more}}says the incident has only lifted her spirits.

“I think it’s political. I have been parking there since 1989. We have always have one vehicle or the other parked there and nothing like that has ever happened,” she said.

In an interview with SEARCHLIGHT yesterday, Charles explained that she attended the ULP’s gospel concert at the Grammar School Playing Field Sunday night and got back home sometime after midnight.

“Usually I would go in the school yard (Lowmans Leeward Anglican) and park there, but it was kind of late and I just thought it was easier to lock the vehicle and come inside,” Charles, a first-time candidate said.

According to Charles, she did not go to sleep until sometime after 1 a.m. and believes that the perpetrator may have been in the vicinity around the time she arrived home.

Later that morning, she discovered that the window on the driver’s side of the was smashed and the car’s battery stolen.

Charles, however, said nothing of value was taken from the car.

She also sent a message to the perpetrators.

“That is not going to stop me. I have been confident all along. We are going forward and even more now, we are resolved to win the seat,” she said.

Charles is hoping to unseat the New Democratic Party’s (NDP) representative for West Kingstown, Daniel Cummings, in the December 9 general elections.

The matter is under investigation by police. (KW)
