Vincy Heat fail to tame Guyana Jaguars

POOR FINISHING, on the part of the Vincy Heat’s front men, allowed Guyana’s Golden Jaguars to go away with a 2-2 draw, when both teams met last Wednesday here at the Arnos Vale Playing Field, in the World Cup Qualifiers.

But, despite his charges digging themselves into a hole by not making use {{more}}of the opportunities presented to them, head coach of Vincy Heat Cornelius Huggins is upbeat about the reverse fixture this Sunday at the Guyana National Stadium.

Speaking to SEARCHLIGHT following Wednesday’s match, Huggins said “I am confident, very, very confident.” For the away leg, however, Huggins said “We need to work on our finishing and I think we would have to make some changes in some positions.” In reviewing the first leg, Huggins lauded his players for coming back on both occasions when they were down to Guyana, but chided them for ruining the chances.

“We were one-nil down, we came back and we fought back. We were behind again and we came back,” Huggins reflected.

“We supposed to have won the game convincingly; too many opportunities we squandered … Too many one on one opportunities… We need to make use of the opportunities; you get one and you suppose to make it count,” Huggins added.

As early as the first minute, the host could have taken the ascendancy, but Cornelius Stewart hit the ball straight into the hands of the Guyanese goalkeeper Akel Clarke.

Stewart was again the culprit, as after rounding Clarke and with an open goal, kicked the ball wide.

The misses proved to be costly, as almost on the rebound, Brandon Beresford breached the defence of St Vincent and the Grenadines to score in the 28th minute.

Stewart made amends on the resumption, as he outran his markers to register the equalizer in the 51st minute.

But second half substitute Ricky Shakes-Bascombe put Guyana in the lead in the 77th minute.

Parity was restored for the Vincentians in the 84th minute through Tevin Slater.

It was a result which satisfied Guyana’s coach Jamaal Shabazz.

“We came here with a point and we leave here with a point… Not bad scoring two away goals and they (the Vincentians) have to come to our home ground,” Shabazz assessed.

He revealed that he was impressed with the Vincentians pace in the attacking third, noting that it is an aspect which his team will have to address this Sunday.(RT)
