Square Deal Shippers owner dies in bike crash

The Kingstown office of Square Deal Shippers was yesterday, March 26, swamped with telephone calls and visitors, as persons slowly came to terms with the passing of the business’s co-owner Edgerton “Creech’ Wood.{{more}}

During the early hours of Sunday, March 25, sixty-year-old Wood, of Arnos Vale, was found lying face down, at the New Grounds public road, with multiple injuries about his body.

The motorcycle enthusiast was pronounced dead at the scene by the District Medical Officer.

His Kawasaki motorcycle, PM 713, was found in a river not too far from his body.

An employee at the Granby Street office informed SEARCHLIGHT that persons had been dropping by to offer their condolences to relatives and friends of the fallen businessman, and calls have been coming in from local, regional and international acquaintances.

“It is a very sad event, but we are trying to move on the best we can,” indicated the employee.

Anne Wood, the sister of the fallen rider, indicated that she was coping because of her faith in God.

“I am a firm believer and since I get to know the Lord, he has been my source of strength.”

The Arnos Vale resident said that she got a call about her brother’s death, shortly after 6:00 am on Sunday.

“I was still in bed when my phone rang… and the person said to me ‘Anne, Creech is dead.’

“I was bawling. I was knocked out. It was like a ton of bricks came down on me; just was out of this world,” she told SEARCHLIGHT during a phone call.

“But I thank God. His Grace will see me through.”

Wood said that she last saw the married father of four about a week ago, and that he was in very good spirits, which was the norm.

Wood was the son of a police officer and had many siblings.

“There wasn’t a dull moment when you were around my brother. He was always full of life,” she noted.

Wood thanked the persons who offered sympathy and showed support for her, from the moment it was understood that Creech had died.

Fighting back tears, she pointed out that this was the third time she is losing a brother in this manner; the first, Francis, in Trinidad many years ago, and on February 28, 2007, Charles ‘Nogo’ Wood lost his life in a motorcycle accident.

During yesterday’s sitting of the House of Assembly, four parliamentarians paid tribute to Wood.

They were St Claire Leacock, Parliamentary Representative for Central Kingstown, Julian Francis, Minister of Transport and Works, West Kingstown Representative Daniel Cummings and Leader of the Opposition and East Kingstown Representative Arnhim Eustace.
